Establishment of Herbal Gardens - 2017
The Advisory Board of the Organization decided to establish Herbal Gardens at schools with the participation of the winners of the Green Lane Program of 2017. It was initiated by Mitsubishi Corporation, Japan through Mitsubishi Corporation of Colombo Branch.

It was significant that funds were approved under the “Project Estimated Budget of 2017” by Mitsubishi Corporation, Japan. We were supposed to implement herbal gardens in the schools of the winning students of each year selected through the Environment Diary Program. But in the Environment Diary Program – 2017, Three students (03) out of Four winners (04) had been selected from the schools where The Herbal Gardens are already established in the previous years.

Those schools are
  • Ananda Balika Vidyalaya-Kotte (2013)
  • Rahula Balika Vidyalaya-Malabe (2014)
  • Bandaragama National School-Bandaragama (2015)
The other winning student of Environment Diary Program 2107 was from Visaka Vidyalaya-Colombo, where we had yet to set up an Herbal Garden.

Therefore, in addition to Visaka Vidyalaya-Colombo, we thought to select some other schools from the 6 remaining finalists of the Environment Diary Program -2017 to establish Herbal Gardens for this year. Only 2 out of 6 schools were left to establish new Herbal Gardens.

As a result, below mentioned three schools were selected to implement the Herbal Gardens in this year.
  • Visaka Vidyalaya, Colombo
  • Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda
  • Wijerama Kanishta Vidyalaya, Nugegoda

After the preparation, the three Herbal Gardens were declared open on the 16th of February 2018 with the participation of the President of Green Cross Sri Lanka, the principals, teachers, children and parents of the respective schools. The main name board of “Green Cross Green Herbal School Garden” and the name boards of the plants have been installed at the relevant locations.
In addition, the following items were supplied to the schools.
  • Plants and Saplings
  • Manure, mainly compost
  • Gardening equipment
  • Items for the construction of a fence
The principals, teachers, parents and children of the schools were delighted that Green Cross Sri Lanka established Herbal Gardens at their school premises and to be maintained with the kind assistance of the Funding Authority.
