GREEN LANE DIARY PROGRAM - 2017
Poster Competition
 
The Poster Competition was held on the 25th March 2017 at Green Cross office premises to commemorate World Water Day 2017. This occasion was graced by around 150 students, teachers, and parents. Moreover, Mr. Anura Handunneththi, Chief Instructor of teachers in Art attached to the Department of Education, Mr. Pradudha Siriwardena, Attorney at Law, Environment Officer of Central Environment Authority participated on behalf of our invitation to evaluate the posters. The children were given one and half hours for drawing and coloring their own posters under the theme “Waste Water”. During that period the invitees, principals and teachers were entertained by the staff members.
 
Teachers’ Seminar
 
The above Teachers’ Seminar was held on the 27th of May 2017 from 08.30a.m to 01.30p.m at the Auditorium of KIU Institute at Battaramulla. Around 50 teachers participated in this seminar.
 
Firstly, the lighting oil lamp was done by Dr. Jagath Seneviratne, the President of Green Cross Sri Lanka, Mr. Vimal Gunarathne, Additional Education Director of Provincial Department of Education and other invitees. After that, the welcome speech was delivered by our president Dr. Jagath Seneviratne. We welcomed all the invitees and teachers.

Drama Competition
The Drama Competition was held on 30th September 2017 at the auditorium of Sri Jayawardhanapura Boy’s School, Kotte. After the welcome, the judge board and the teams of the drama competition were invited by the staff members of the  Project to present their dramas.

Speech and Essay Contest
 
After the evaluation of the written diaries, a total of 100 outstanding students were selected to be exposed to the next competition on the Speech and Essay contest. This was organized on the 21st of October 2017 at the premises of the office of Green Cross Sri Lanka at Koswatta from 8.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. The panel of Judges for the evaluation of the performance was as follows ;
  • Soma Jayakodi, Prominent writer
  • Tharaka Wasalamudali Arachchi, Prominent Announcer and Writer
  • K.A.D Sepalika, Deputy Librarian of Parliament Library and Attorney-at-law.
 
The rules and regulations were explained by Ms.Hasitha Walpola Assistant Director of Green Cross Sri Lanka before the commencement of the contests relating to the speech and essay. The students were summoned for the contest in two batches, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
 
Award Ceremony 
 
The Green Cross Sri Lanka has accomplished a decade of environmental activities from 2005 onwards for the benefit of the people of Sri Lanka with special emphasis on the school children. The Commemorative Ceremony was held on the 18 of November 2017 at the Auditorium of KIU Campus, Sri Lanka. The Annual Award Ceremony was organized under the “Green Lane” Competition in the selected schools in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts.
 
The Ceremonies were graced by Hon. Susil Premajayantha, Minister of Science, Technology and Research, Ministry of Science, Technology and Research of Sri Lanka. The air tickets to the winners and the teachers for visiting Japan were given. As well as environment badges, certificates, gifts, and mementoes were presented by the distinguished invitees.
 
 Japan Visit
 
On the completion of the activities of the program, the following team visited Japan from the 08th of December 2017 to 12th of December 2017.         
 
  • 1st Place – M. FATHIMA IRSHAN ISHRA, Bandaragama Central College, Bandaragama
  • 2nd Place – DIDUNI HESANGA KODITHUWAKKU, Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo
  • 3rd Place – GEETHMI GAYANA WIJESIRI GUNAWARDHENA, Ananda Balika Maha Vidyalaya, Kotte
  • 4th Place – SAWANI MILANKA WICKRAMAARACHCHI, Rahula Balika Maha Vidyalaya, Malabe

It is significant that the winners of the program who participated at the GCJ Award Ceremony in Japan held in Tokyo on the 06th of December, have successfully interacted with the children of other countries. At the end of the Award Ceremony, the winners and the teachers were awarded mementos and certificates.
 
They were also fortunate enough to visit Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan and meet the officials. They thanked them for their kind assistance. This year we had a chance to visit Nishi Shinjuku Elementary school in Japan.
Furthermore, it was possible for the members of the team to meet Hon. Shoo Iwasaki, the President of Green Cross Japan at his office.
They had the opportunity to engage in a sightseeing program of Japan before returning to Sri Lanka on the 12th of December 2017.
