GREEN LANE DIARY - 2013
Poster Competition
 
As a partial event, a Poster Competition was held among the schools selected for conducting the Environment Diary Competition in view of the World Water Day of 2013,  under the theme  “Water and Co-operation”.
 
The winners of the competition were as follows,
 
 1st Place –  Uditha Dampriya, Bandaragama National School, Bandaragama
 
2nd Place – K.M.T.Sewmini, Bandaragama National School, Bandaragama
 
3rd Place –  Ayodhya Rashmini, No.01 Jonier School, Piliyandala

 Teachers’ Seminar
 
The Teachers’ Seminar under the Green Lane program of 2013 was held on 15th June at the Lecture Hall of the office premises at Koswatta, Battaramulla was participated by a total of 35 teachers under the theme of “The creation of an Eco-Friendly Child through environmental education”.
The above Teachers’ Seminar commenced at 09.30 a.m. and ended at 01.30 p.m. educating the government teachers for the implementation of the Green Lane Diary Program who are educating the school children of Grade 5 in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara Districts.
The main Resource Person at the Seminar was Dr. Ajantha Perera, Former Senior Lecturer of the Colombo University and the Founder of Solid Waste Recycling National Program of Sri Lanka. Those present at the occasion invited by GCSL were the following distinguished persons.
  • Pradeep Randivala, Senior Lecturer of the Financial and Administrative Faculty of Colombo University and the former Head of the Faculty.
  • Menaka Senevirante, Secretary of General Manager of Mitsubishi Corporation, Colombo Branch.
  • Hemala Vitanaachchi, The Head of the Nursing Department, Kaatsu International University  
Drama Competition
 
The competition of 2013 was held on 28th September 2013 at Rahula Balika Vidyalaya, Malabe.  All schools participating at the Green Lane Program were requested to present a Short Drama of 10 minutes duration by five actors or actresses to depict the need and protection of the conservation of the environment of Sri Lanka. The 17 schools of Colombo, Gampaha and Kaluthra districts presented the Short Dramas evaluated by the Panel of Judges.
 
Speech and Essay Contest
 
After the evaluation of the written diaries, a total of 100 outstanding students were selected to be exposed to the next competition on the Speech and Essay contest. This was organized on the 26th October 2013 at Jayewardhenapura Boys School, Kotte from 7.30 to 4.00 p.m. and judged by a panel of judges named by the organization. All the students presented the speeches and also wrote essays on environmental protection.
 
Annual Award Ceremony
 
The presentation of Awards to the school children and teachers under the above project took place on 12th November 2013 from 09.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon at the main hall of the National Youth Services Centre situated of Maharagama in the Colombo District. On this memorable day the program was implemented for the ninth time by the National Organization of Green Cross Sri Lanka commencing from 2005 onwards up to the present was a very significant occasion for the school children conducted as a competition studying in Grade 5 of selected schools of Colombo, Gampaha and Kaluthara districts numbering 7000.
 
According to the Agenda of the day the Welcome Speech was delivered by Dr.Jagath Seneviratne, President of the National Organization of   Green Cross Sri Lanka. At the outset the President conveyed his sincere gratitude to the distinguished invitees present at the occasion in the midst of their other work as it happened to be a working day for all.
 
Mr. Naoto Honda, the General Manager of Mitsubishi Corporation Colombo Branch was invited to distribute the air tickets, certificates, and gifts to the winning two students.

 2nd Place : Dulmini Diwyanjalee, Ananda Balika Vidyalaya, Kotte
 
Thereafter, Mr. Devkumar Fernando, Chief Operating Officer of Mitsubishi Corporation Colombo Branch and Mrs. Ayomi Warnakulasuriya , Executive of the Business Department Mitsubishi Corporation, Colombo Branch presented mementos, certificate and gifts to the teachers and students.  Hon. Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of Education was invited to address the ceremony and distributed the air tickets, certificates and gifts to the winning two students.

Yearly Tour of Japan
 
On completion of the activities of the program, the following team visited Japan from  12th Dec.2013 to 16th Dec. 2013.

It is significant that the winners of the program who at GCJ Award Ceremony in Japans held in Tokyo on 14th December were very successfully interacted with the children of other countries. On conclusion of the Symposium, the winners and the teacher were awarded mementos and certificates. They also were fortunate enough to visit Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan and meet the officials and thanked them for their kind assistance. Furthermore, it was possible for the members of the team to meet Hon. Shoo Iwasaki, President of Green Cross Japan at his office. They had the opportunity to engage in a sightseeing program in Japan before returning to Sri Lanka on 16th  December 2013.
