Poster Competition Commemorating World Water Day 
 
In 2011 in order to enhance the environmental knowledge of the young generation of Sri Lanka: a country in the tropical region possessing a very rich biodiversity, GCSL decided to implement awareness programs as they will be the future citizens of the country. Accordingly, the World Water Day which falls on the, 22nd of March was commemorated by launching water related activities. In this connection, a Poster Competition was held among the students of Grade V and the following three winners were selected for the issuance of certificates and valuable gifts in 2011.

  2. M.A. Nipuni Sandeepa, Munidasa Kumaranatunga Vidyalaya, Kaduwela
  3. Vikum Anurada Walpola, Wethara Junior School, Wethara
Drama Competition
 
In 2011 the Advisory Board members decided to launch a program on short dramas among young school children focused on environment as an aesthetic aspect which are more attractive to young minds. Accordingly, a competition was held in a few selected government schools in the Colombo district during 2011. The dramas presented by the school children were excellent as they depicted the importance of environmental conservation. Accordingly, in 2011 the following schools were judged as the best three winners.     
  1. Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya, Nugegoda
  2. Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda
  3. Pannipitiya Darmapala Vidyalaya
 
In addition, the best male and female actors were also selected and the actors were presented with certificates, gifts and mementoes to the schools for the excellent performances organized by the teachers.
 
Speech and Essay Contest
 
After collecting the completed Green Lane diaries, they were evaluated and 100 outstanding diaries were selected. Hence, students were advanced to a speech and essay contest on the 29th November 2011.Ultimately a panel of judges selected two winners for the offer of trips to Japan and participated at International Children’s Symposium along with the teacher who was selected to accompany them.
 
Annual Award Ceremony
 
The award ceremony of the Green Lane program was held on the 14th November 2011 at the National Youth Services Council Center graced by the Hon. Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of Education as the Chief Invited Guest, Mr. Toshiyuki Shibata, General Manager of Mitsubishi Corporation, Colombo Branch, and Ms. Menaka Seneviratne his Secretary and a host of other invitees in Sri Lanka. On this occasion, the air tickets were presented to the winners and the teacher, certificates, and gifts to outstanding 100 children and 300 school level students. In addition, certificates and mementos were presented to the winners of the Drama Competition and Poster Competitions. This final occasion was attended by a total of around 1500 Invitees, students, teachers, principals, and parents.
 
Yearly Tour of Japan     
 
The project on Green Lane on writing of environmental Diaries as a competition among the school children of Grade V in the government schools was introduced to Sri Lanka by Green Cross Japan in 2005 and for the seventh time it was launched in 2011 at a total of  46 schools participated by 5000 school children in each year for the selection of two or three winners for the offer of trips to Japan for the participation at GCJ Award Ceremony in Japan held in Tokyo the winners were accompanied by the selected teachers and the  President of GCSL for a   period of one week with all facilities such as air travel and accommodation in Japanese Hotels with the fund made available by Green Cross Japan. In 2011 the following winners visited Japan and successfully participated at the GCJ Award Ceremony.
